Parrot Investment Press Release

BioCarbon Engineering announces a seed round of investment from Parrot S.A., leaders in the field of drone technology. Parrot will join existing investor The Parrot financing will be used to accelerate the development of BioCarbon Engineering’s proprietary planting system. Henri Seydoux, CEO at Parrot, and Yannick Levy, Director of Business Development, will join BioCarbon Engineering’s board with an observer seat.

The 2016 COP21 climate conference in Paris reaffirmed the need to take urgent action to reduce carbon in the atmosphere. Parrot and BioCarbon Engineering understand that drone technology can combat industrial scale deforestation with industrial scale reforestation to help meet these goals on a global scale.

“Drones can reach areas where it has been impossible up until now to plant trees which makes what BioCarbon Engineering does one of the greatest potential applications of drone technology”, said Levy.

Currently, over 6.5 billion trees are lost each year due to human activities and natural disasters. At the UN Climate Summit, a commitment was made to restore 350m hectares of degraded and deforested land by 2030 (estimated to require up to 300bn trees to be planted). It is clear that traditional planting techniques will need help in order to achieve these targets.

BioCarbon Engineering’s founder, ex-NASA engineer Lauren Fletcher and his team recognise that emerging technologies including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones), remote sensing and machine learning can be combined to enable rapid landscape reforestation and restoration.

Fletcher said, “Our technology is making it easier for ecosystem restoration groups, mining companies and forestry groups, both private and public, to plant the trees, where they need them, at a fraction of the time and cost. It’s a big goal, and having Parrot’s in-depth market knowledge and global reach will be invaluable in helping us achieve it.”

In addition to the planting, the company’s systems gather highly detailed terrain data. This is being used by customers to help manage their land, while post-planting audit capabilities will also be offered.

BioCarbon Engineering was founded in 2014, and is based in Oxford, UK.
